Letting Go

A Poem by Cyrette Curran

If Sisyphus can ignore innocent belief to push,

If Mount St. Helen can rebuild withdrawn soil with a cascade of vibrance,

And the lizard can regrow his tail,

If the wind can allow the brutal way home to me,

Surely I can free myself from the falseness of forgiveness.

Quiet the negotiations between my head and heart,

Simply consider for a moment,

While the threads of grass play with my hair,

While the trees speak our native tongue,

What would happen

If I allowed myself grace.

That sweet compassion, that lightness that comes,

Once the guilt is released,

How inviting it seems,

Once we get out of the way of ourselves, of nature.

I implore you,

Do not allow yourself to disappear

Behind the shadow of self-hatred,

It is more than enough.

Give yourself the grace you so desperately need.
